A trip to the Faroe Islands is an extraordinary experience. It is worth taking care to prepare properly so that the trip to the archipelago and its sightseeing will be stress-free for you.
Journey to the Faroe Islands
The easiest way is to fly with Atlantic Airways from Copenhagen. If you are flying with connecting flights from Poland, we recommend packing in a carry-on bag. Sometimes checked luggage arrives late to the Faroe Islands, so it's worth carrying at least 3 days' worth of equipment for sightseeing.
What to pack for the Faroe Islands
Dynamic weather, which you can read about here makes it a must have in your suitcase:
- good rain jacket
- trekking trousers
- good shoes with a grip sole
- warm jumper or blouse
- hat and gloves
- sunglasses and sunscreen with SPF50.
Payments in the Faroe Islands
The applicable currency is the Faroese krone and the Danish krone (exchange rate 1:1). The Faroese krone can only be paid in the Faroe Islands. In most places you can pay by card, including Revolut. However, it is a good idea to have a supply of cash with you in case there is no reception, terminal failure, etc. Paid trails can be paid for in advance online or in cash on site (e.g. entrance to Mykines or the trail to Drangarnir).
Roads in the Faroe Islands
The best way to explore the islands is by car. The roads are in good condition and pass through numerous tunnels. Undersea tunnels are tolled and, if you rent a car, the tolls are charged automatically and settled when the car is returned to the rental company. Fuel prices are similar to those in Poland; there is no autogas at the stations. Bus transport is adapted to the needs of the local population, it is difficult to explore the archipelago by bus. Ferry transport is well organised, reservations are required on several lines, details on ssl.fo.
