SUÐUROY
A trip to the southern edge of the archipelago is one of the most exciting Faroese excursions. Suðuroy is famous for its impressive cliff coastline, as well as its temperamental locals. Due to ferry schedule constraints, the trip is possible on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays.
SUÐUROY
- Gathering place: ferry terminal in Tórshavn
Ahead of us is a two-hour ferry ride on the Smyril from Tórshavn to Tvøroyri. It is possible to have breakfast on the ferry. During the cruise we will see the east coast of Sandoy, as well as the islands of Skúvoy, Stóra Dímun and Lítla Dímun. From the port of Tvøroyri, we will head to the west coast of the island to the village of Fámjin, where the original of the first Faroese flag, Merkið, designed by Faroese students studying in Copenhagen, is located. The flag is housed in a typical Faroese church, which is stunning in its simplicity and functionality.
From Fámjin we will drive south to the fishing town of Vágur. On its outskirts is the majestic Vágseiði cliff. If the weather is good, it's the perfect place for a picnic. We then head further south to the village of Sumba and Cape Akraberg. There is an iconic lighthouse there, marking the southernmost point of the archipelago. We'll take the return route from Sumba along an old mountain route, which features some of Faroe's most beautiful cliffs - Beinisvørð. Heading north again, we will take the old route from the village of Hov to Øravík, along which there are monumental basalt columns.
Another majestic cliff awaits us in the village of Hvalba. This is Norðberg, which fell victim to ocean waves some time ago. From Hvalba we will drive to Sandvík, the most northern settlement on Suðuroy, which boasts an extensive beach. From Sandvík, we'll trek toward the west coast to admire the lone rock formation Ásmundarstakkur. The bravest will have to cross a bridge, built by local farmers.
Departure from Tvøroyri to Tórshavn according to the schedule at about 18:30. On the ferry it is possible to have dinner. Arrival in Tórshavn at about 20:30. Farewell.
