Ólavsøka - the most important day in the Faroe Islands

G!festival - an amazing event
2024-07-26To begin with...
I have lived in the Faroese archipelago for more than 20 years and have had the opportunity to get to know it up close and from many perspectives. Like everyone else, I have my favourite places here that I love to return to with a smile. There are beautiful memories associated with them and I consider the following list as my subjective TOP of the Faroe Islands.

KALSOY
For me, it is the most beautiful place in the Faroe Islands. The island of Kalsoy, which means island of men in Polish, is shaped like a spindle. It is almost 20 kilometres long, and you reach it by ferry from Klaksvík. You then have to drive over 15 kilometres by car, including four mountain tunnels, some of the narrowest in the archipelago. This road will lead us to the settlement of Trøllanes. There, in my opinion, one of the most beautiful trekking routes begins, which takes about an hour to complete. The route takes us to the lighthouse at Cape Kallurin from where the view is breathtaking. A view that inspired the makers of the latest James Bond film 'No Time to Die' - the final scenes, including Agent 007's death scene, were filmed there. Translated with DeepL.com (free version)

Lake Sorvagsvatn and Bosdalafossur waterfall
When I first set out on the trail I imagined the route completely differently. In the pictures it's a massive cliff and so I was sure I was in for a climb. Nothing of the sort, the path leads you gently along the lake and only rises at the edge of the cliff, with steps making the walk easier. For a significant part of the way the views are not impressive - at least compared to other places in the Faroe Islands . However, once I reached the end of the path and turned towards the lake I froze in stillness, and tears of emotion flowed down my cheek. I have no words to describe that moment. It was my trip of a lifetime. The view of the lake levitating over the ocean, the waterfall falling into the ocean and the high cliffs captured my mind. To this day, if someone asks me about one of the most beautiful places in the archipelago I say without hesitation: Sorvagsvatn and Bosdalafossur.

Tjørnuvík
This is probably the most beautiful 'end of the world' I know. It's a quiet atmospheric settlement, but as they say, it's not the place but the person that builds the stories and the magic. This is exactly what it is like in Tjørnuvík. In this picturesque place by the black beach, by the bay, lives, as I call him - my Grandfather Hans Esbern. An elderly gentleman who everyone who has visited the Faroe Islands knows. The waffles he serves, with rhubarb jam and whipped cream, have won the heart of many a foodie. Served in Hans's small traditional house while telling stories about Faroese history and present-day life, they taste delicious, and a visit to Grandpa's home will be remembered forever. Tjørnuvík is a must visit - not only for the divine views, but also for meeting Hans!

Saksun
Saksun is a place that can only rival the trail to Bosdalafossur or Mykines Island in terms of fantastic views . I often come here with my children for picnics. In summer we go to a café where they also serve delicious waffles with whipped cream. We dine on them while I drink my coffee enjoying the view of the beautiful waterfall above the village and the sapphire lagoon below. From the bench in front of the café, I look out at the mighty peaks descending towards the ocean. Sometimes we walk down all the way over the water to the lagoon. My kids get excited about the fact that a powerful tide once cut off the way for tourists and hope that one day we too will experience a similar adventure.

Sornfelli
Sornfelli - or more precisely the area around Mjørkadalur. A place that has been on my list for a while now. However, my face is smiling at the thought of this place, because beware: it is a car park located right next to a prison :D A view that a 5-star hotel would not be ashamed of, in the Faroe Islands it is reserved for criminals. We can take a closer look at the complex - there is, among other things, mini-golf and a fence that is low for a prison - there is hardly any crime on the Faeroes, and most inmates are in arrears with their maintenance or get into a fight in the harbour. From the car park there is a wonderful view of a long fjord surrounded by high mountains, and numerous streams and waterfalls.
