What to pack for the Faroe Islands?
2024-11-12Christmas in the Faroe Islands - traditions, flavours and... dancing.
2024-12-01So...you’ve decided to travel to the Faroe Islands and are now wondering what to do next? The most important step is behind you. Now it's time to look at how to get there (and what to pack in your suitcase - I'll talk about that in my next post). Fortunately, the choice is not difficult – there are 2 options available: plane and ferry. Each of these options has its pros and cons. Let’s take a closer look.
Faroe Islands by plane
The fastest way to reach the archipelago is by plane. Unfortunately, there are no direct flights from Poland, but regular connections to the mainland are provided by the Faroese carrier Atlantic Airways. In addition, Norwegian Widerøe and SAS also fly to the archipelago. Most flights depart from Copenhagen, with flights from Bergen, Reykjavik, Oslo and Paris also available. In my opinion, the best option for travellers from Poland is to fly from Gdansk via Copenhagen to the Faroe Islands' only international airport, Vágar Airport (FAE). If you are lucky, the whole journey will take about 5 hours.
I strongly recommend you look for connections that allow you to travel on one ticket. You will avoid re-bagging your luggage and buying a new ticket if you miss your connecting flight. Round-trip fares cost around €500 and any tickets under that amount are a real bargain! I know what I'm talking about, I fly to and from Poland several times a year. ;)
Faroe Islands by ferry
An alternative way to reach the Faroe Islands is by ferry from Hirtshals, Denmark. Such a journey takes 36 hours and is part of the longest regular ferry service in the world, connecting Hirtshals with Seyðisfjörður in Iceland. The ferry is the best choice if you want to take your own car on the journey. The lines will take you on board: Smyril Line . Such a long cruise is a great opportunity to admire Shetland, with the beautiful Cape Muckle Flugga, and enjoy the restaurants, cinema and swimming pool available on the ferry.
The highest prices are in between June to the end of August, but the cost of tickets also depends on the type of cabin and whether you sail with or without your car. On ferries to the Faroe Islands, not only the height but also the length of the car is important. You have to pay extra for every 1 metre over 5 metres of car length. On average, assuming you travel with a car up to 5 metres long, such a ferry trip costs around €600 - €800 round trip.
I am curious which option you will choose? I’dd like to invite you to my next posts, in which I’ll tell you what to take with you to the Faroe Islands, what to pack and wear and whether it is worth travelling here with children.
Your Sabka.
