2025-03-03What an exciting debut! The new Við Tjarnir hall came to life in the north of Tórshavn, and the Faroese islands handball team's inaugural match against the Netherlands provided us with an unforgettable experience. The match ended with a score of 32:32, and the full house - more than 3,000 fans - confirmed that this event had already gone down in gold in the history of Faroese sport. The team led until the break (18:14), and emotions reached their zenith in the final minutes when the Netherlands briefly went into the lead. In the decisive action, Leivur Mortensen levelled the score after a great pass by Elias Ellefsen á Skipagøtu, giving the team a draw that, according to coach Peter Bredstorff-Larsen, almost tastes like a victory.

Last night, the Faroese players showed that they can turn the game around. After an unfavourable start, when the opponents took advantage of the absence of their biggest stars, our players did not allow themselves to be surprised. Dynamic actions by Teis and Elias in the final seconds of the first half gave us the lead, which rekindled the fighting spirit both on the pitch and among the fans.

The second half was full of intense clashes - despite momentary stumbles, the team's determination and professionalism earned them key points. Leivur Mortensen, with a confident shot, showed that Faroese handball is on a whole new level and that young players like Óli Mittún have a bright future ahead of them.

This experience proved that professionalism, great preparation and the calmness of the organisers are the foundation for success. The Farers' attitude now takes on new meaning on the way to advancing to the 2026 European Championships, and we are already looking forward to the next challenges - the next clash is scheduled in Almere, where we will face an equally strong rival.
