Ólavsøka - the most important day in the Faroe Islands

Medieval Faroese culture and organisation had a distinctly Nordic origin and form, and they established their Althing (parliament), later called Løgting, on the Tinganes peninsula in Tórshavn. Tórshavn is the capital of the modern Faroe Islands, and the Faroese parliament is recognised as one of the oldest in the world. In the second half of the 12th century, the Faroe Islands became closely associated with the Kingdom of Norway as part of it. Translated with DeepL.com (free version)

In turn, at the end of the 14th century, as a result of the Kalmar Union, the Faroe Islands became part of the Danish-Norwegian alliance. When this union was replaced by the Norwegian-Swedish union in 1814, the former Norwegian territory of the Faroe Islands remained under the sovereignty of the Kingdom of Denmark. Due, among other things, to its distance from both Norway and Denmark, the Faroe Islands have always retained a special jurisdiction along with a distinct language and culture, guarded by the Løgting.
The Danish royal trade monopoly long stood in the way of the archipelago's development. When it was abolished in 1856, an export fishing industry quickly developed in the Faroe Islands, sparking the development of a modern market economy and population growth. Special constitutional status, combined with a growing export economy and a cultural national awakening at the end of the 19th century, fuelled Faroese nation-building and the establishment of political autonomy. Since the adoption of the self-determination agreement in 1948, the Faroe Islands have enjoyed a fairly high degree of autonomy.

Today, fishing and aquaculture are the basis for the production and export of high-quality Faroese fish products, which account for 95 per cent of total export income from goods. Thanks to their economic prosperity, the Farriers have developed a welfare society along the lines of the typical Scandinavian welfare state model, with free education and healthcare for all.
